In Baptism, we are connected with Christ – his death, burial, and resurrection (Romans 6:3-4). In Matthew 28:19, Jesus tells us that the goal is discipleship. He then tells us how disciples are made – through baptism and teaching. We grow in our discipleship as we live out our baptism (through daily contrition and repentance) and as we continue to place ourselves in a position of learning at the feet of our Lord. Why do we baptize babies? We baptize babies because they are sinful (Psalms 51:5) and because they can believe (Psalms 8:2). Faith is not limited to the cognitive realm (becoming a reality in our life because of a decision that we made), but is a gift of God, created by His Spirit through the delivery of the forgiveness of sins. In Baptism, the forgiveness of sins is delivered. At the baptismal rite, parent(s) promise to raise their child as a disciple of Christ. This promise translates into regular worship attendance and teaching their child the faith (or seeing that their child is taught the faith).
